Timber Products Output Studies

Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) conducts Timber Products Output (TPO) studies to estimate industrial and non-industrial uses of roundwood across the United States. Primary wood-using mills are sampled, by state, to estimate roundwood usage. Historically, the TPO study was a periodic 100 percent canvass of all primary mills and is moving to an annual sample design Nationwide.

Our questionnaires are designed to determine location, size and types of mills in a state, and the volume of roundwood received by product, species and geographic origin. We also determine the volume, type and disposition of wood residues generated during primary processing.

FIA conducts logging utilization studies to relate TPO to FIA inventory volume. This is done by visiting a cross-section of logging operations in a state to characterize the sites logged, trees harvested, volume utilized per tree, products taken, and residues left behind.

TPO Toolkit:

TPO One-Click Factsheet

TPO One-Click Fact Sheets

The Timber Products Output (TPO) One-Click Fact Sheets allows visitors to view TPO fact sheets via an interactive experience. Click on the desired state on the map to produce a real-time fact sheet of that state based on current TPO data. Data include state-wide production, products, number of primary mills and types, roundwood exports/imports and retained production.

NOTE: The TPO One-Click Fact Sheets currently contain fact sheets for states processed utilizing the newest methodology. More states will be added in the future as data availability and resources permit.

TPO Interactive Reporting Tool

TPO Interactive Reporting Tool

The Timber Products Output (TPO) Interactive Reporting Tool allows visitors to view TPO data via an interactive experience. Click on the desired state(s) or counties on the map to produce TPO data based on the geographic area and year of interest. The TPO Interactive Tool includes estimates of timber products, logging residue, mill residue, residential fuelwood, and other removals based on the selected area.

NOTE: The TPO Interactive Reporting Tool currently contains data for states processed utilizing the newest methodology. More states will be added in the future as data availability and resources permit.

TPO Explorer

TPO Explorer (Coming Soon)

The Timber Product Output (TPO) Explorer is the tool for investigating the spatial and temporal patterns in roundwood production, logging residue, mill residue, residential fuelwood, and other removals. Explore the latest surveys or go back in time and map county estimates by product or residue type, owner, species group or source. Track mill production (exported or retained) and receipts (imported or retained) by state, species group, and product. Pattern mill locations by type of production and major species group.

TPO Data Download

TPO Data Download

The Timber Products Output (TPO) Data Download allows visitors to download Timber Product Output Survey data at the state and county level. TPO Data Download provides TPO data in .xlsx file format. Data included for download are the most granular state and county level data publicly available to our users. These files allow visitors to produce estimates of timber products, logging residue, mill residue, residential fuelwood, and other removals at the state and county level.

NOTE: The TPO Data Download currently contains data for states processed utilizing the newest methodology. More states will be added in the future as data availability and resources permit.
